Minister: Schools employ 1,000 more teachers than they need

“We do not want four math teachers with five classes, but rather one teacher who holds 20 classes. Earlier, we could not offer severance pays to those who do not have the full class schedule or any class at all. Now, we have the money for those people as well,” Verbic told Radio-Television of Serbia.

Last week, the Serbian government passed a bill of amendments to the Law on the Foundations of the Education System, and Verbic explained that, after adopting the amendments, teachers would be able to choose whether they would like to retire after meeting one or both pension requirements.

Under the current law, teachers retire when they meet one condition - either turn 65 or accrue 40 years of service.

Now, they can decide whether they want to retire after they meet one or both conditions, Verbic said.

The amendments also envisage teachers having the final say in the appointment of their principal, as a prospective principal should get the support from over 50 percent of school staff.
