Vineyards and orchards belonging to Agricultural-Industrial Mill, Niš (RIK Niš) used to give grapes for the production of wine for export to the US. They were planted 10 years ago, and have not been cultivated for the last three years.

Srba Marinković, a retired engineer who used to work at RIK, planted the vineyards. “Seven years have passed since I set foot in this vineyard. It was a bad investment from the start”, he said.

The vineyards were planted with a Rhine Riesling clone imported from Germany, meant for the production of top-quality wines.

To plant and grow one hectare of the vineyard costs 12,000 euros. However, the cost of restoration of the crop is far more important to a new owner. “Clearing the land costs more than planting new clones, and that land is only good for vine growing”, said Marinković.

PIK Niš still exists formally. It has 90 employees who occasionally get pay checks with the money they get from leasing business premises.
