There were 495,838 tourists in Serbia from January to the end of March this year - 17 percent more than in the same period last year.

There were 283,362 domestic tourists in Q1, accounting for 57 percent of the total, with 212,476 foreign tourists accounting for the remaining 43 percent.

According to figures released by the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia, there were 1,534,170 overnight stays in Q1 - 21 percent more than in the same period in 2015.

Domestic tourists generated 1,006,140 overnight stays, or 66 percent of the total, which was a 19-percent increase compared to Q1 2015.

Foreign tourists generated 528,030 overnight stays, accounting for 34 percent of the total, which was a 24-percent increase.

Domestic tourists generated most of the overnight stays in mountain resorts (54 pct) and spas (23 pct), with foreigners mostly opting for Belgrade (50 pct) and mountain resorts (19 pct).

Most foreign tourists - 47,163 - came from Montenegro, followed by guests from Bulgaria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Russia and Romania.
