A German man whose body was found in Borca near Belgrade "was not a member of either the police or intelligence services," said the German security circles.

"German who died in Serbia was not intelligence officer"

In 2012 bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against him, the newspaper said, and added that it is "not clear when he settled in Serbia."

The body was found on July 3 in an advanced stage of decomposition. According to preliminary information, he died of a heart attack, reports the German paper.

"The German embassy in Belgrade is dealing with this case, and trying, in close consultation with the Serbian institutions, to resolve it," a spokeswoman has been quoted as saying.

The article added that "a number of officials of the (German) Federal Law Enforcement Service went to Belgrade to support local services."
