The police was then given the permission to use deadly force against the protesting citizens, and according to reports, it was "sheer luck" there were no other casualties.

"Three pedestrians fell under the armored vehicle, an 8-year-old girl died, while a woman and her baby were taken to the hospital," the Ukrainian Interior Ministry said on Monday.

RT is reporting that "locals believe the driver of the vehicle was drunk at the time of the hit-and-run accident," while local press said that the perpetrators "barely escaped the scene of the crime, as the fury of the locals erupted in clashes, with stones being thrown at security vehicles."

"During the evening, near the premises used by security forces, several hundred citizens gathered, calling soldiers fascists and breaking barracks windows with stones, setting two vehicles on fire. In response, the Ukrainian security forces fired several shots in the air," said an eyewitness.

The leader of the regional police loyal to Kiev, Vyacheslav Abroskin, said that the two soldiers responsible for the hit-and-run incident have been arrested and handed over to a military prosecutor.
