Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Madrid to protest against a four-day visit by Pope Benedict XVI scheduled to begin on Thursday. The pope will be in Madrid from Thursday until Sunday and he will attend the Catholic World Youth Day celebration. Hundreds of thousands young people from around the world will attend the celebration.

More than hundred feminist and gay movements and leftist groups took part in the protests yesterday.
