Tens of thousands of people flocked to the country's churches to attend solemn midnight processions with crosses and icons, RIA Novosti reports. Russian Patriarch Kirill led the Easter service in Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral, attended by several thousands of people, including President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Easter is celebrated by world's Christians "Let the memories of Easter… strengthen our faith, give us courage, wisdom and strength to walk difficult roads of life and fulfill the divine will,” Kirill said after the service. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev wrote that Easter celebrations "fill hearts with joy, hope and love." He also congratulated Christians in his Twitter account. "Congratulations to all Orthodox Christians and everyone celebrating Easter," Medvedev wrote. In Jerusalem, Christian pilgrims filled the city, while Jews are celebrating the weeklong Passover festival, with the city's Jewish Quarter also full of visitors, said reports. Over the weekend, a large number of Israeli police were deployed in the Old City, which contains sites holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims. In Rome, Pope Benedict XVI led the Easter vigil late on Saturday, with tens of thousands followed the ceremony held in St. Peter's Basilica on giant screens on the square outside.
