The WikiLeaks revelations have claimed their first political scalp in Europe with the sacking of the German FM's chief of staff, guardian.co.uk reports. Helmut Metzner "acted as a mole for the Americans, keeping the U.S. embassy in Berlin posted last year on the confidential negotiations to form Angela Merkel's new government," says the website. WikiLeaks cables "claim first scalp" "The staff member of the FDP's federal headquarters, who has admitted his contacts with the U.S. embassy in Berlin, has been relieved of his duties as chief of staff for the FDP chairman," said a party statement. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, described in the cables as inexperienced, exuberant and wild, first dismissed the reports of a mole as false, but Metzner admitted he was the source of U.S intelligence. Guardian also reports that liberal MP Hans-Michael Goldmann told the Bildzeitung newspaper that a German ambassador abroad behaving like U.S. Ambassador to Berlin Philip Murphy would be "called home", and that Murphy had failed to apologize for the scandal.
