NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen is in Moscow where he held meetings focusing on the Afghanistan war, and ways to increase Russia's assistance. Moscow has thus far shown lukewarm support for the U.S.-led war, according to news agencies. NATO seeks Russia's help over Afghanistan At this point, Russia allows NATO troops transit through its territory, but is refusing to provide helicopters or train Afghan pilots and police. NATO and Russia, however, occasionally cooperate in fighting terrorism and drug trafficking. Rasmussen has met with Russian FM Sergei Lavrov and will meet with President Dmitri Medvedev. RIA Novosti reports that told a news conference on Wednesday the alliance hoped to work with Russia on missile defense. Rasmussen said he wanted to see Russia-NATO cooperation in the field of Theatre Missile Defense, the system aimed at protecting deployed military forces. The NATO chief also proposed conducting joint exercises with Russia in the sphere, reported RIA Novosti. Earlier, Rasmussen was quoted as saying the western military alliance "does not see Russia as an enemy, but as a partner of strategic importance".
