It is hoped a referendum in Moldova this Sunday will bring the small ex-Soviet republic out of political limbo in one fell swoop. Opinion polls show the governing Alliance for European Integration is likely to secure a big “yes” vote in favour of allowing the people to directly elect their own president. Moldova to hold landmark referendum Over the last 18 months, three attempts by parliament to appoint a head of state have failed. It is the most important job in the country – and opinion on the streets is divided: “I will go and I will vote “yes”. I will vote for the country to change, for my right to elect a President. I don’t want someone else to make the decision for me.” said one woman. But “I am not going to vote, I disagree with the policies of the leaders, of the so-called Alliance for European Integration because they only care about themselves, they don’t care about the people or Moldova, not at all.” was the opinion of another. Polls show the majority of Moldovans will, however, turn out to vote and up to 90 percent are likely to say yes. If the vote IS in favour of change, the President will be directly elected alongside a parliamentary vote on November 14.

Over the last 18 months, three attempts by parliament to appoint a head of state have failed.
