Singh's Congress-party led government must now prove its majority in Parliament or face new elections amid soaring prices for food and other items that threaten to impede economic growth. Although the Left parties have withdrawn their support, Singh's government hopes to win support from a major regional party and other independent lawmakers to stay in power. The civilian nuclear deal calls for India to get access to U.S. civilian nuclear technology and fuel, the BBC reported. "We talked about the India-U.S. nuclear deal, and how important that is for our respective countries," President Bush was quoted as saying. Singh responded by saying, "India and the United States must stand tall, stand shoulder-to-shoulder and that's what is going to happen."
