Officers Rajko Popov and Slobodan Zlatanovic found the abandoned infants on October 2, according to the statement.

The statement added that they reacted quickly and handed the abandoned babies over to health care workers to determine if they had any health problems.

The Police Union said it "publicly commended the police officers who showed once again that MUP (Interior Ministry) members have big hearts and that humane behavior prevails among them."

The statement, signed by Police Union President Dejan Djukic, added that the two policemen with their actions "showed Europe and the world the true picture of the police of Serbia."

The union also urged the media to publicly express gratitude toward the police officers who saved two young lives "and thus report to the general public that the Serbian police will always take care of all citizens who are in its territory."
