MUP, UNHCR seek improvements to asylum system

An Interior Ministry statement said that the meeting addressed the years of cooperation between the ministry and the UNHCR on refugee naturalization, fighting human trafficking, entry into registers of births and acquisition of personal documents for Roma and others at risk from statelessness.

Noting that Serbia "treats refugees and asylum seekers better than some other countries in the region," Schodder expressed UNHCR's readiness to continue to provide strong support to Serbia to help it respond adequately to a growing inflow of refugees

He said that, since 1992, UNHCR invested over EUR 500 million as assistance to Serbia for protection and integration of refugees and other displaced persons.

Stefanovic and Schodder also expressed concern over the legal and humanitarian needs of an increasing number of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea and Somalia.
