The Serbian Education Ministry and Chinese Ambassador to Serbia Zhang Wanxue signed a memorandum on cooperation on Wednesday. The memorandum envisages introduction of the Chinese language classes in Serbian schools. Memorandum on Chinese language pilot project signed Serbia’s Education Minister Zarko Obradovic and the Chinese ambassador signed the memorandum on a project that will allow 2,462 elementary and high school students to learn Chinese at schools. Obradovic said that the pilot project would last until the end of the current school year and that Chinese could be introduced as an optional subject if the pilot project proved successful. “The pilot project is aimed at familiarizing Serbian elementary and high schools students with the Chinese language, culture and tradition through learning of the basics of Chinese. This way we will allow young generations to get another advantage and get to know and understand a great prosperous state and nation,” the Serbian education minister noted. Wanxue said that 14 teachers from China would hold the classes for the Serbian students and that there was an increasing number of Serbs who were interested in getting to know the Chinese culture. He stressed that the cultural exchange between the two countries had a long history and assessed that there was still room to develop it even further. Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, who attended the signing of the memorandum, said that Serbian citizens should learn Chinese because they would need it. Jeremic, who is a president of the Inter-state Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation between Serbia and China, assessed that China was a key factor of world peace and economy and that it had an increasing influence on political and economic developments in the world. Pointing out that Serbia was China’s only strategic partner in this part of the world, the Serbian foreign minister said that the two countries partnership would give evident results.
