The Higher Court in Belgrade has rehabilitated Prince Pavle Karadjordjevic, the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia regent. A ruling which declared him a criminal in 1945 has been quashed. Court rehabilitates WWII Yugoslav regent According to daily Vecernje novosti, the court has also quashed all the legal consequences of the 1945 decision, including property confiscation. The communist authorities accused Prince Pavle of “violating the Constitution upon coming to power, taking the entire authority into his own hands and ignoring the people’s representatives”. He was also accused of “signing the Tripartite Pact and therefore contributing to the Axis powers’ aggressive war”. His daughter Princess Jelisaveta Karadjordjevic filed the rehabilitation request three and a half years ago. Her lawyer Dusanka Subotic-Homen told the daily that the defense had produced written evidence that the prince had not been present during signing of the Tripartite Pact. “With the 1945 decision Prince Pavle was declared a criminal out of ideological-political reasons,” Subotic-Homen stressed. “The rehabilitation does not only speak of changes that are happening here every day but also of making serious injustices right, like this one,” she added. “I believe this ruling has a historic importance. Because once archives that are still closed today open, the Serbian people will get the knowledge it cannot reach today. This is just another correction of history we have been learning. The history we knew nothing about,” Subotic-Homen concluded. Prince Pavle Karadjordjevic (wikipedia.org)
