Education trade union President Branislav Pavlovic has stated that members of the union could go on strike as the new school year begins in Serbia in the fall. This is the likely outcome unless an agreement with the government on unfreezing of salaries is reached by September 1, he warned. Teachers' union slams "charity bonuses" The union has stated that the government’s decision to give teachers one-time bonuses of RSD 5,000 (EUR 48), instead of raises, was tantamount to handing out charity. “Out of 40,000 members of our union more than 93 percent came out in favor of strike,” Pavlovic told a news conference in Belgrade today. He explained that the union's proposal was to increase education sector salaries by three to four percent in September, October and November, and to continue with the raise in April next year, depending on inflation figures. According to Pavlovic, this proposal was submitted to Finance Minister Diana Dragutinovic during a meeting on Thursday, which was also attended by Education Minister Zarko Obradovic. The union representative said that teachers' salaries had not been increased in the past two years, and that the average dropped from EUR 460 to EUR 346. The education minister said regarding the announced strike that “threats and blackmail is not useful to anybody” and invited the unions to talks. On Thursday in Belgrade, the government decided to approve bonuses for public sector employees worth RSD 5,000, under the condition that their salaries do not exceed RSD 50,000. Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic today announced that pensioners too are likely to get the same bonuses. Serbia froze public sector salaries and pensions earlier this year as part of its EUR 2.9bn stand-by loan with the IMF.
