Farmers begin mass protest The farmers are demanding the price of wheat to be increased in order to reach RSD 15 per kilogram, while their representatives say that the import of milk, pork and beef needs to stop immediately. Association President Bogdan Suvljanac said that farmers will be protesting in Sid, Sremska Mitrovica, Pancevo, Vrsac, Pozarevac, Beska, Sabac, Bogatici, Zupa and Arilje, but they would not be blocking traffic. The protesters will keep their vehicles in only one lane of the regional roads. The Association is also demanding insight into the long-term plan and strategy for the development of agriculture, in order to plan production better. They are asking the state to make all outstanding payments to farmers. The farmers urged better communication and coordination between the Agriculture Ministry and Trade and Services Ministry in order to solve these problems, adding that the government needs to be more involved in the issues. The 50,000-strong Association states that there were no systemic solutions for many sectors of agriculture and that monopolies were being tolerated, adding that inferior quality food was being imported, while domestic products were not protected. Agriculture Minister Sasa Dragin reacted to the news by saying that he was calling on the companies buying wheat "to be fair" when determining the price per kilogram. He said that the wheat being offered is of an excellent quality. Association officials stated that there have been many months of meetings with Agriculture Ministry officials that have not yielded any results in solving the problems.
