A thousand marathon runners and another thousand recreational participators are set to run the 23rd annual Belgrade marathon on Sunday. “Thanks to the support of the city assembly and all public communal services, a technically excellent marathon has been organized. Unfortunately, the participation of all of the registered elite runners is still unsure because of the problems with air traffic in Europe,” marathon director Dejan Nikolic said. Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports Goran Kreclovic said that the marathon is very important for the promotion of athletics and sports in Serbia. “The Belgrade marathon has given great joy to our citizens for many years now. I call on all Belgraders to support the marathon runners by coming out in large numbers to the marathon route,” Kreclovic said. President of the Serbian Olympic Committee Vlade Divac reminded that this year’s marathon would mark the 100-year anniversary of the first ever marathon run in Serbia. “I hope that the record for participators will be broken this time,” Divac said, adding that the marathon was with good reason highlighted as a very important event for Belgrade. Serbian Athletics Association President Veselin Jevrosimovic said that the Belgrade marathon is the “most massive athletic manifestation in Serbia and the best promotion of sport in the support of living a healthy life.” The marathon kicked off at 1000 CET by the St. Mark’s Church, while the amateur race began five minutes later, starting from Hotel Moscow.
