Serbia's national television broadcaster RTS might have to pay a large fine to the European football organization UEFA, reports say. This could come as RTS decided on Tuesday to air a parliamentary debate instead of a Champions League match, local newspapers said. UEFA could fine RTS over scrapped broadcast RTS has the broadcasting rights to the European-wide Champions League competition in Serbia but is legally bound to air national legislative debates. On Tuesday, a crucial debate on a resolution condemning war crimes in Srebrenica 15 years ago stretched deep into the night and bumped the match between FC Bayern Munich and Manchester United. As a result, the television violated its contract with UEFA and would probably have to pay a one million euro fine, Belgrade daily Blic said. RTS director Aleksandar Tijanic told the newspaper that "the authorities" promised to pay the fine during the debate on Tuesday night when parliamentarians refused to continue unless their debate was aired live. The same newspaper, however, quoted Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic as denying that the legislature had made such a promise. The scrapping of the football match broadcast in favor of a marathon political debate apparently outraged somebody enough to make a bomb threat against parliament from a Belgrade pay phone. The call interrupted neither the debate nor the broadcast. Bayern won the home leg of their duel against Manchester 2-1, and the parliament passed the crucial declaration with a wafer-thin majority with 127 of 250 votes in favor.
