The International Day Against Homophobia marks the day 19 years ago when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental diseases. Citizens Rights Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic says that homophobia is directed "not only against homosexuals, but is a problem for all of us". International day against homophobia "When someone in our society feels endangered and unsafe because of their personal attribute, none of us is completely free," he said in a statement issued to mark the day in Serbia. According to Jankovic, insisting on equal rights and fighting against any form of discrimination, including sexual, does not jeopardize our freedom, but rather complements it. "Lesbians, homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender persons are often the victim of hatred and open discrimination. Due to widespread prejudice untruths about them are easily created and accepted, making the vicious circle of homophobia," stated Jankovic.
