The Politika daily journalists' union has today asked the paper's editor-in-chief, Ljiljana Smajlovic, to step down. Besides this, the union wants to see the management team go, including the general director, Srdjan Janicijevic. The statement adds that several attempts to discuss this with the management have failed, with the union's suggestions ignored, and unacceptable solutions offered in return. "At the same time, a newspaper that is pro-government turns into a pro-party newspaper. We see this as a serious danger both for some parts of the government and the paper. The result is a drop in circulation figures and a loss of reputation," the union says. The statement adds that the management did not fulfill its financial obligations toward the employees. The letter with the demands was sent to President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, chiefs of party clubs in parliament, Politika Newspapers A.D. managing board, and journalist associations. Politika is a daily newspaper published in Belgrade since 1904.
