Industry lacks environmental awareness

This has been indentified as the main reason behind the river disasters and the recent fish plagues.

Deputy Director of the Hydro-Meteorological Bureau of Serbia, Mikša Jovanović, told the Beta news agency that the large-scale death of fish in rivers is more likely during the summer because there is a lack of “useful” materials in the water, while the industrial waste rate remains the same, compared to the winter season.

This summer in Serbia, there were ten such fish plagues registered, and criminal charges were filed against several companies for pollution, which could end in fines and prison terms of three months to eight years.

According to the existing laws, the fines for businesses responsible for environmental catastrophes go as high as EUR 37,500.
