Hague Prosecution against Gotovina’s release

“The indictee can at any moment demand to be released from custody pending trial, and the Prosecution is almost always against such motions. However, the Tribunal itself has the final say,” Kavran said.

Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told Del Ponte the Croatian Government would provide all the necessary guarantees that Gotovina would, if released, appear in the Hague when ordered to do so.

Del Ponte, attended the regional conference in Brioni, Croatia, dedicated to regional cooperation in prosecuting war crimes.

She said the cooperation established between the Hague Prosecution and the Balkans states’ prosecutions was productive.

One of the issues discussed at the conference is Del Ponte’s initiative to let Hague convicts serve their sentence in the countries of origin.

Serbian War Crimes Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Bruno Vekarić told B92 that Prosecutor Vladimir Vukčević opened the debate regarding the initiative.

“Vukčević received unambiguous support from Bosnian Prosecutor Marinko Jurčević, while the Croatian delegation was rather reserved on this. This is the first time regional prosecutors addressed the issue at a public meeting,” Vekarić said.
