ZAGREB The Coalition of Associations of Refugees strongly condemned the removal of a bilingual Latin and Cyrillic script plate from the municipal building in Krnjak. They also urged the Croatian police to find the perpetrators as soon as possible. Refugee associations condemn incident in Croatia “This incident is an act of hatred towards everything relating to Serbs in Croatia and is contrary to the basic European values of trust, tolerance and the rule of law,” reads a statement signed by Miodrag Linta, president of the coalition. The Coalition of Associations of Refugees urged the Croatian police to find the perpetrators as soon as possible, and the Croatian Prosecutor's Office to finally start to deal with the cases of hatred towards members of the Serb community. “We expect from the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to send a letter of protest to the Croatian Foreign Ministry and call for an urgent investigation into the incident,” the statement reads. The cases of hate crimes against Serbs are very frequent in Croatia, but in most of the cases the police do not mention hatred as a motive of attack, the Coalition said. “The above mentioned treatment by Croatian institutions is the best indicator that Serbs in Croatia are second-class citizens and that no laws are applied to protect them from discrimination as in case of other citizens,” Linta said. Unidentified individuals removed the official bilingual plate written in Latin and Serbian Cyrillic scripts from the municipal building in Krnjak, Croatia, and police investigation was underway.
