SKOPJE Macedonia's ruling VMRO-DPMNE coalition emerged victorious in 12 municipalities after Sunday's local elections. This was announced on Monday by the state election commission (DIK), which based its data on 100 percent of votes counted in those towns. But the opposition SDSM party said there were irregularities, and announced it would file complaints once the official results had been confirmed. Ethnic Albanian DUI party also declared victory in seven municipalities, while another Albanian party, DPA, said it hoped to win in Tetovo, where a mayor from its ranks is already in office. The state election commission said that the turnout was 67.7 percent, and stressed that it received reports of "serious irregularities" from "international observers, the citizens and the media".
