Vujadin Popovic and Ljubisa Beara were convicted of genocide in Srebrenica by the Hague Tribunal and given life sentences. Drago Nikolic was sentenced to 35 years while Ljubomir Borovcanin was freed of genocide charges, but sentenced to 17 years for crimes against humanity and violating laws of war. Hague: Life sentences for Srebrenica Radivoje Miletic and Milan Gvero were convicted of the same charges as Borovcanin and sentenced to 19 and five years respectively. Vinko Pandurevic was freed of genocide charges as well, but sentenced to 13 years of prison. Popovic was the chief of the Bosnian Serb Army Drinska Corps for security and Beara was a security chief in the Republic of Sprska’s army. According to the verdict, they had “genocidal intentions” to destroy the Muslim prisoners as an ethnic group with the organized execution of 7,000 prisoners. Nikolic, a former security officer of the Zvornik brigade of the RS army, was convicted of supporting the genocide activities. Borovcanin was the commander of a special police unit and Pandurevic was also a commander in the Zvornik brigade. Miletic and Gvero were assistants of RS army commander Ratko Mladic, who remains a fugitive. This was the largest trial led before the Hague Tribunal thus far.
