Croatian unions have announced protests for September because they are dissatisfied with the government’s measures against the economic crisis. The unions will call for a change in government if the protests fail to improve the situation in Croatia, it was stated. Union protests announced in Croatia President of the civil initiative "You tighten your belts, you gang of thieves” Josip Dell'olio announced that if their demands are not met, the unions will take the protests one step further and demand a new government. He said that the unions are asking for the so-called crisis taxes to be abolished, to have VAT back at 22 percent, and to make a large variety of products available VAT-free. President of the Alliance of Independent Unions of Croatia Ana Knezevic said that “since no changes have occurred, it is necessary to change the people conducting these policies”. President of the Independent Croatian Unions Kresimir Sever accused the government of not thinking about the citizens and their needs. He added that “it is very important that all Croatian unions organize the protest, to gather as many people as possible, because only such protests will be successful”. “There are too many reasons to protest as it is and it is strange that the people have not reacted yet,” Sever said. As was announced earlier, the protests will begin on September 9 in Vinkovci, and will be held later in Osijek, Sibenik, Rijeka, Pula and Split, while the final protest will be held at the main square in Zagreb on September 15.
