Albania has officially submitted its EU membership application, says Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency. Albania, with a population of around 3.2 million and one of the poorest countries in Europe, is expected to need several years to meet all the EU accession criteria. Czech PM: Albanian EU bid received Topolanek’s statement came after talks with Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha. Albania’s application comes four months after Montenegro submitted its own application in December. Serbia could follow at the end of this year.
