A coalition led by PM Milo Djukanovic's party could win absolute majority in Montenegrin elections due to be held on Sunday. This is according to the latest opinion polls published in that country. Djukanovic bloc likely to win The state electoral commission has confirmed that 16 parties will battle to win parliament seats. Just as on every occasion for the past 20 years, Djukanovic's DPS party-led coalition, dubbed, "For a European Montenegro", is absolute favorite. "Expectations and predictions are that the ruling coalition will have the highest percentage of votes, without any doubt. What remains is the question of whether they will have an absolute majority or lack some percentage, which then creates a different situation," professor Svetozar Jovicevic of Podgorica University explains. The coalition's potential partners, he continued, for now appear to be only ethnic Albanian parties. However, the latest polls show that the coalition might win as much as 54 percent of the vote and form the next government on its own. The Socialist People's Party and the New Serb Democratic Party are second and third in the surveys, with 17 and 12 percent support respectively. Jovanovic said that unlike on previous occasions, this campaign was "lukewarm". "The focus was on social issues – what the government calls the consequences of transition, while the opposition sees it as theft, crime, plunder and so on," he said, and added that the debate was less fierce than before. Analysts are saying that these elections were called so that Djukanovic could confirm his two decades of undisputed rule. They expect the DPS to win a new mandate before the effects of the world economic meltdown hit the country, and add that the weak opposition would likely not fare any better under different circumstances.
