Montenegro celebrates independence day today, exactly two years after citizens voted in a referendum to break away from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Political divisions that were then evident from the results of the referendum itself have only partly faded, witnessed by the fact that representatives of the majority of Montenegrin opposition parties did not attend Filip Vujanovic’s inauguration as president last night. Montenegro celebrates Independence Day Of the opposition parties, only the MPs of the Bosnian parties and one MP from the Democratic Union of Albanians attended the ceremony at the Government House in Cetinje. The only other Albanian MP, Mehmed Bardhi, did not attend the ceremony. Opposition parties gave different reasons for not attending the inauguration ceremony. Even though May 21 and 22 are celebrated in Montenegro as public holidays, several stores and shops remain open. Earlier, Serbian Ambassador to Montenegro Zoran Lutovac said that relations between the two countries needed to improve. Lutovac said that while relations between the two countries were good, “they are not even close to the possibilities that realistically exist.” He told reporters in Cetinje that relations between the two countries had room for improvement at all levels, and that his role as ambassador was “to build where necessary and to make what is already good, even better.” Lutovac said that as soon as a new government was formed in Serbia, the question of citizenship would be brought back up, which, in his opinion, was an important issue for citizens of both countries. The ambassador said that there was cooperation between Serbia and Montenegro in many fields, but that it needed to be institutionalized, as it had been in the field of culture.
