Sofia and Moscow will sign the agreement to implement the South Stream gas pipeline project in January 2008. This will most likely happen during a visit by Russian president Vladimir Putin to Bulgaria, the Bulgarian economy ministry said earlier this week. Putin to visit Bulgaria for pipeline deal Bulgaria stands to benefit from South Stream as it will boost revenue from transit fees and will ensure gas deliveries to Europe, said Bulgarian economy minister Petar Dimitrov who was on a two-day visit to Moscow. No details have emerged from the talks that Dimitrov has had with Russian counterparts on the project. The two sides have signed a joint statement for the implementation of the project despite Sofia's apprehension that the project may repeat the fate of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline which experienced massive delays after the three participant countries - Bulgaria, Russia and Greece, signed the relevant memorandum. That project finally got underway in April 2007 when the three sides signed an agreement for its implementation. The new pipeline will not be an alternative to any other projects and all existing bilateral agreements with Russia on gas delivery and transit will remain in force through 2030, said Dimitrov.
