"Relations between the two countries could hardly be worse than they have been - not through any fault of ours. We were striving to at least not add fuel to the fire, and to the harsh, very often ugly statements that were coming from Zagreb," Ljajic said when asked whether he expected relations with Croatia to now improve.According to him, it will now become evident whether Croatia's "increased rhetoric" was the result of the campaign, or if it represents a much deeper problem in relations between the two countries.
Ljajic commented on the results of the election to say that the HDZ "managed to sell old goods in a new package," while SDP leader Zoran Milanovic "lost his old left-wing voters while looking for new ones."
"I fear we'll have an unstable government made up of the HDZ and the Most (Bridge) - an anti-system party, 20 percent of voters in Croatia have cast protest votes for the Most and the Zivi Zid (Human Shield). A stable government can hardly be expected from a coalition with a big party that has five times as many voters as the Most," he said.
Serbia's absolute interest is to have good relations with all neighbors, including Croatia, Ljajic continued, adding that his country's trade with Croatia reaches EUR 700 million, "and the desire is that it increases, and to attract new investments."
Regional stability is a precondition to do that, both in Zagreb and in Belgrade, he said.
"I cannot understand why they have not realized this in Croatia," the Serbian minister remarked, adding that "all countries of the region depend on the overall stability in this area in order to attract investments and significantly increase trade exchange."
