This will also be beneficial to Cuba, as it will have one more friend among EU member states, Nikolic's presidential press office said in a statement.

Nikolic expressed the expectation that Serbia and Cuba would intensify their economic cooperation, noting that it was natural that excellent bilateral relations should be accompanied by developed economic relations.

Serbia will back Cuba in the fight against the sanctions that are making the Cuban citizens suffer, Nikolic said.

Conveying to Nikolic greetings from Raul Castro, President of the Council of State of Cuba, Hernandez noted that Cuba's position on non-recognition of Kosovo's self-proclaimed independence remained unchanged.

There is a mutual interest to enhance the economic cooperation between the two countries, and Cuba is particularly interested in cooperation in agriculture and biotechnology, the statement said.

Later in the day, Hernandez was also received by Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic.

Cuba's continued and principled position on, and support for, Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty was highlighted at the meeting.
