The Council of the European Union announced on Tuesday that it has decided to extend the EU rule of law mission in Kosovo - EULEX - by June 14, 2018.

Council of European Union extends EULEX mandate

The statement said that the key goal of the EULEX civil mission was to assist and support the Kosovo authorities in the area of rule of law, and especially police, the judiciary and customs services.

The previous mandate of the EU mission in Kosovo expired at midnight on Tuesday.

The Kosovo government on Friday passed a decision to extend the mandate, but the presidency of the Kosovo Assembly in Pristina failed to secure a two-thirds majority that would allow the adoption of a law. For that reason, the Council of the EU made the decision on the extension.
