Progressives, Pensioners join forces for elections

The PUPS on Thursday announced they were ending their pre-election coalition with the SPS - a party that is a member of Vucic's current cabinet.

At a press conference after the meeting on Friday, Vucic said the agreement was reached quickly, "because of common ideas, not because of some other reason."

Vucic added they discussed "how to guarantee the stability and security of pension payments and how to make them are higher - but also what the key prerequisites for the economy's progress are."

"Pensioners are the real heroes of the changes in our country," said Vucic.

Krkobabic also addressed reporters to say this party today "defined with the SNS a continuation of cooperation that has lasted for two years."

"The PUPS and myself personally have supported a striking concept of fiscal consolidation that must have in its future regularity and security of pensions... only well-ordered finances can be a guarantor of financial stability," said Krkobabic.

Referring to the appreciation Vucic expressed toward pensioners who in their previous elections gave them the greatest support, Krkobabic said this was "not pejorative - it is a quarter of the country's population, 1.7 million people, who consciously and responsibly stood in defense of a concept."

"At one point there was a real danger in the form not of a dilemma what pensions will be like, but whether they will be there," said he, adding, "we managed to dispel that dilemma as well."
