MP: Campaign to give Kosovo "international capacity"

"It represents an attempt to move from the freezing point the gaining of international capacities of the self-proclaimed state of Kosovo in several directions, toward UNESCO as part of the UN System, Interpol, Council of Europe," Drecun said.

According to him, the campaign was launched after the Brussels talks agreements on the Community of Serb Municipalities (ZSO) in Kosovo, and the formation of a special court for war crimes - and with the goal of "giving Pristina the satisfaction, and so it can justify what has been accepted before the Albanian public."

According to the Beta agency, Drecun said that "some powerful countries are lobbying in favor of Kosovo," but that "Serbia is conducting a strong diplomatic campaign."

He has also been quoted as saying that "the optimism that Kosovo will not be admitted to UNESCO' membership is the result of a trend that is present."

"Serbia, with its strong diplomatic activity from one UNESCO member to the other, has been able to persuade those country of the importance of the fact Kosovo should not be a member of UNESCO. Through strong arguments, these countries are faced with their own responsibility and with their own understanding of relations in international relations," said Drecun.

He said there was "pressure to recognize Kosovo's membership" on one hand, and on the other indisputable facts that show this would seriously damage international order, the UN system and what UNESCO stands for.

Drecun added that "Serbia must fight for the ZSO and normalization of relations with Pristina in order to put more important issues, such as Serbia's property in Kosovo, on the agenda."

He said that Belgrade, unlike Pristina, is meeting its obligations from the Brussels talks, and that "it is most important that a message arrives from Brussels that Pristina must fulfill what has been agreed and must form the ZSO."

"I have been encouraged by the position of the U.S., from personal contacts with their diplomats, when it was said they insist on the ZSO being formed, which shows that Washington understands well how important the formation of this community is for the stabilization of relations," he said.
