Progressives win local elections in Vrbas

Based on some 50 percent of votes counted, the Serb Progressives (SNS) have won 40.41 percent in the local elections held in the town of Vrbas on Sunday.

VRBAS Based on some 50 percent of votes counted, the Serb Progressives (SNS) have won 40.41 percent in the local elections held in the town of Vrbas on Sunday. The are followed by the Socialists (SPS) with 23.21 percent, and the Democracts (DS) with 18.35 percent of the votes. Progressives win local elections in Vrbas The turnout was higher than 60 percent. "We made an amazing turnaround, people rewarded truth, honesty and responsibility," said the leader of the Progressives (SNS) and First Deputy PM Aleksandar Vucic, who was in Vrbas last night. Vucic noted that the SNS in four years made "an amazing turnaround," because the party now won 40 percent of votes - compared to 13 percent in 2009. "We found that people, despite the tough decisions that we made like honesty, truth and responsibility," he stressed. "This is our fifth in a series of convincing wins in Vojvodina, in Vrbas we won under the toughest conditions, in which both the SPS and the DS were in power at the time when the province invested here to get the support for the DS," he was quoted as saying. Vucic also asked all those who "spoke about the legitimacy" on the national level if they had considered "changing the legitimacy on the provincial level." The elections in Vrbas passed without major irregularities, said President of the Municipal Election Commission Predrag Radovic, who spoke earlier on Sunday. Vice President of the DS and head of the provincial government in Vojvodina Bojan Pajtic, however, said last night that "votes were being bought in Vrbas for RSD 5,000 to 8,000." In October 2009, in the previous elections, the Coalition for a European Vrbas (DS, SPO, SDP) won 36 percent of votes, the SPS-PUPS 18.8 percent, SNS - 13.7 percent, 7.5 percent went to the SRS, the DSS-NS received six percent, and the LDP-LSV-List of Villages 5.4 percent.
