Serbian president to open April debate on Hague in UNGA If Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Chairman Nebojsa Radmanovic decides to participate in the debate, he will speak after Nikolic, while Rwanda’s president will be the third to address the participants. According to the daily, Russia, China, the U.S., Brazil, South Africa, Kenya and other countries are interested in taking part in the debate. UN member states were invited to the debate on Tuesday. The debate was scheduled by UN General Assembly President Vuk Jeremic in November after Croat Generals Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac had been acquitted by the Hague Tribunal. This will be the first time since the Nuremberg Trials that the work of an international criminal judiciary will be openly debated in the UNGA. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Jeremic will also speak at the beginning of the debate. Representatives of the International Criminal Court and International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda have also been invited to the debate. Jeremic told Vecernje novosti that preparations for the debate were going well. He explained that his job was to choose the topic and to make sure that what was going to be said at the debate would become an official UN document. “It is up to member states to present their opinion. I think that the afternoon debate will be extremely interesting because it will be an opportunity to discuss the Tribunal’s work from the professional side and to hear opinions of representatives of the victims. I believe our efforts will help achieve what I believe should be the most important goal, and that is the true reconciliation among people. It needs to be based on full truth,” the UNGA president was quoted as saying. Jeremic, as the UNGA president, is authorized to draft an official UN document after the debate. Even though there have been pressures to change the date of the debate, it has remained unchanged. It is still unknown if Croatia will attend the debate and if its representatives would address the participants.
