BRUSSELS Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic has asked that until Jan. 10, customs duty not be charged for goods destined for northern Kosovo. Dacic made the request in Brussels on Friday during his meeting with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton. PM wants customs duty suspended until January The Serbian prime minister believes that this arrangement should remain in place until an agreement has been reached on the manner in which the customs income will be distributed. "The talks will continue on that subject on January 10 on the technical level," Dacic told reporters after the meeting. He noted that working groups would resume their technical level talks, bearing in mind that under an earlier procedure, certain kind of goods, such as the excise goods, were being sent to the administrative crossing Merdare. “All these issues should be solved in a way that will honor the agreement between Ashton, Thacu and me, which means that without a joint agreement, the goods going to the north of Kosovo should be exempt from customs and other duties until January 10,” the PM was quoted as saying. Also on Friday, the chief of EULEX customs told Serbs from northern Kosovo that they "must pay customs", and that "anything else must be decided in negotiations between presidents of governments of Serbia and Kosovo in Brussels". However, the head of the government office for Kosovo, Aleksandar Vulin, reacted to this on Friday to say that "Serbia has received assurances that EULEX did not stand behind the alleged statements of its customs chief". Vulin told Tanjug in Brussels that EULEX was "a status-neutral" organization", and that "any activity outside that framework would lead to a violation of the IMB agreement" - and the possibility that the Serbian government might suspend its implementation. Meanwhile, the Serbian PM said he was pleased with the conclusions of the EU Council of Ministers and his talks with Ashton, adding that "the moment for Serbia on the road to EU has never been more favorable": "Serbia has been given a great opportunity and must not miss it. Political stability and unity is needed in order to achieve that goal." Beta Tanjug
