Opposition Serb Progressives (SNS) party leader Tomislav Nikolic says he is "convinced there will be no coalition between the SNS and the Democratic Party". He said this would be the case "even if a large number of members of his party wanted that to happen". SNS leader: No coalition with Democrats The two parties are considered the most popular in Serbia. Nikolic asserted in the interview for the state broadcaster RTS that the Progressives had a lead of some ten percent in the polls. "I am sure of it, because I know how much authority I have within the party. But if the party decides to do this without me, that would also be a possibility," Nikolic stated. Nikolic acknowledged that "somebody has to form the next government, either the SNS or the DS". Even if the situation demanded that both parties enter the government, he continued, "I cannot imagine myself offering amnesty to everything that the Serbian citizens have been fighting against for the last ten years". When asked how he and his party would resolve the issue of Kosovo, Nikolic said that, when he is invited by Serbian President Boris Tadic to talk about the subject, he will show up with a proposal, but will request the presence of cameras. When it comes to imposing the recognition of Kosovo's independence as condition for EU membership, Nikolic said this condition was set by a large and important EU member state, noting, however, that this was never explicitly requested from Serbia. Nikolic believes talks on Kosovo should continue to the end, adding that, while conversing with, as he put it, serious people, he realized that Europe has a strong desire to make Serbia an EU member, "and will not go as far as to impose conditions unacceptable for a nation that cares about itself".
