Swiss FM Micheline Calmy-Rey has stated that she stands by recognition of Kosovo’s independence despite accusations against Kosovo PM Hashim Thaci. “Thaci has been in power since January of 2008, the Declaration of Independence and its recognition by numerous countries does not depend on his personality,” she stressed. Switzerland not questioning Kosovo independence Regarding the report on human organ trafficking, the Swiss FM has stated that the accusations need to be investigated by EULEX. “The countries which are involved, especially Kosovo, need to bring them to light. It is necessary to build a rule of law in Kosovo, and that also means to look into its own past,” she explained. Calmy-Rey said that immediately after recognizing Kosovo’s independence, Bern had requested Pristina to respect the laws and build a rule of law. According to her, Switzerland was not the first country to recognize Kosovo but 30th or 31st. “Austria did it before us, if that convinces you,” the Swiss foreign minister said but pointed out that Switzerland had been among the first countries to tell the UN that it was necessary to speak about Kosovo’s independence. Calmy-Rey denied the accusations that Switzerland had “turned a blind eye” to Pristina. “We said in 2008, you have a state now and that state needs to have a rule of law. If there were some horrific crimes in the past they cannot be swept under the rug,” she told Swiss dailies Tages-Anzeiger and Der Bund.
