Iraq is interested in a wide array of products of the Serbian defense industry, said Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac after his visit to Iraq on Thursday. Iraqis are also interested in contracting Serbian metal and engineering companies on major infrastructure projects, said the minister. "Iraq interested in Serbian arms, construction services" "They assured us that they need contractors for the construction of an airbase and military hospitals, as well as various kind of ammunition produced in Serbia and other defense industry products," Sutanovac told Tanjug. Reminding that Serbia's defense industry export to Iraq has reached several hundred million dollars in the past few years, Sutanovac said that military-economic cooperation with Arab countries has great potential and that Serbia's export in this field could reach one billion U.S. dollars this year. "We already have some contracts with Iraq, and three Lasta aircraft were delivered to Baghdad the same day I was there. The Iraqis made it very clear they are interested in renewing these contracts and I am sure that we will get more work in Iraq, in addition to the helicopter overhaul project we are currently engaged in," Sutanovac said. Sutanovac also discussed the possibility of training Iraqi police and soldiers in Serbian schools with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Interior Minister Jawad al-Bulani and Iraqi Armed Forces Chief of Staff Baderkhan Al Zibari. The Serbian defense minister also discussed the issue of Kosovo-Metohija with his hosts, since Iraq is among the countries that have not recognized Pristina's unilateral act of secession.
