The return of judges and prosecutors to the Kosovska Mitrovica District Court was planned for today, but has been postponed. The courthouse is located in the northern, predominantly Serb part of the tense, ethnically divided town. The Serbs north of the Ibar River do not accept the authority of the Kosovo Albanian government in Pristina, nor its indepednence declaration. Return of judges to K. Mitrovica court postponed Belgrade warned that the court, which was previously the cause of some of the worst rioting in the town, should only reopen in agreement with Serbian authorities. Meanwhile, Kosovo police, EULEX and KFOR have stopped implementing an "operational plan for preservation of security" in northern K. Mitrovica, which was put in place after one person was killed when a hand grenade was thrown at peaceful protesters, and after a member of the Kosovo assembly was shot and wounded. The announced return of 15 judges and prosecutors, the majority of whom were supposed to be ethnic Albanians, met Serb warnings of new protests, and fears that of fresh trouble in this part of Kosovo. It was EU mission, EULEX, chief Yves de Kermabon who announced earlier this week that the return of judges and prosecutors appointed by the Kosovo Albanian president in Pristina had been postponed. He said that talks on this subject would continue. Pristina said that they were "not in favor of any hasty moves" in northern K. Mitrovica after the Kosovo Albanian government had opened its office there. It was the opening of the office that cause the Serb protest, during which a man was killed and 11 others injured. In related development, local Serbs and Belgrade officials have been upset by Pristina government's interior minister, and his recent statement that "special police units could be deployed in northern Kosovo". President Boris Tadic warned about Bajram Rexhepi’s statements, but Serbs in the north also said they considered it a threat use of force. France's ambassador in Pristina, Jean-Francois Fitou, was quoted as saying that a possibility of "solving the northern Kosoovo issue" with "firm autonomy had not been ruled out, and added that Kosovo Albanian Prime Minister Hashim Thaci was also "susceptible" to such an idea.
