Interior Minister Ivica Dacic gave opposition SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic an update on the ministry’s findings regarding rumored threats to his safety. Dacic told the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) leader about all of the information that the police and other security institutions have uncovered regarding threats to Nikolic’s safety. Minister updates opposition leader on threats Dacic stated that the police were taking the threats against Nikolic very seriously. He said that the task of the police was to protect Nikolic and to check the claims related to threats against him, as well as to take measures against all who participated in these threats. The police statement said that the guesswork, rumors or downplaying of the threats, that is surfacing in the public and media daily, is helping the problem, and added that such actions do not help Nikolic, the police, or any other state institution. The ministry will continue to provide security for Nikolic, the police stated after the meeting between Dacic and Nikolic. The threats to Nikolic's life allegedly came from opposition SRS leader Vojislav Seselj, who has been detained at the Hague Tribunal undergoing his war crimes trial for the past seven years. SRS reacted to the reports by filing charged against the reporter who originally wrote the story, and against SNS. Nikolic and a number of other party officials left SRS in 2008 to form the new party.
