War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukcevic said that the search for the two remaining Hague fugitives is intensifying further. He said that a clear political will for cooperation with the Hague Tribunal has been demonstrated. Prosecutor: Search for fugitives continues “This can no longer be an obstacle for us on the road towards Europe. We cannot be held hostage by anyone, not even Ratko Mladic or Goran Hadzic,” Vukcevic said. He said that the Hague Tribunal “is the only place where Mladic and Hadzic can prove their truths,” since the rules of the Hague Tribunal do not allow for them to be tried in Serbia. He said that the action team has decided to not give any statements that include details related to the search, adding that he and Hague cooperation action team coordinator Rasim Ljajic have said on several occasions that it is possible that Mladic could be arrested by the end of the year. “I expressed hope and belief in that and I shared this optimism with Rasim Ljajic…we’ll see,” he said. Vukcevic repeated that he believes it was a mistake that Mladic’s helpers were arrested, adding that the arrests were made before the action team was formed. “His helpers would not have been arrested if the action team was formed, because I would have been against it,” he said. Vukcevic said that the recent report given to the UN Security Council by Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz was “the most positive one yet.” “Brammertz gave the report based on what he saw, and I think that he saw a lot,” Vukcevic said. “This can no longer be an obstacle for us on the road towards Europe. We cannot be held hostage by anyone, not even Ratko Mladić or Goran Hadžić,” Vukčević said.

He said that the Hague Tribunal “is the only place where Mladić and Hadžić can prove their truths,” since the rules of the Hague Tribunal do not allow for them to be tried in Serbia.

He said that the action team has decided to not give any statements that include details related to the search, adding that he and Hague cooperation action team coordinator Rasim Ljajić have said on several occasions that it is possible that Mladić could be arrested by the end of the year.
