The European Commission is looking into the question of the issuing of the Serbian passports in Kosovo because of the potential illegal migrants, a daily says. European Union member-states are legitimately concerned about the possibility of illegal migrants from the Western Balkans, whether they are the direct source or the transit countries for illegal migration, Danas newspaper writes. "EC looks at illegal migration, passports, and Kosovo" Riccardo Mosca, from the cabinet for media cooperation of European Commission Vice President Jacques Barrot, said that the commission is working intensively with these countries in order to secure the measures needed to stop illegal migration. He said that the commission, at the same time, supports Kosovo in the efforts to solve problems in the sectors of rule of law, justice, freedom and security. The newspaper, quoting sources from the Interior Ministry (MUP), said that 7,647 applications have been made in Kosovo for new passports. The article further says that the issuing of biometric passports to Kosovo Albanians is one of the constant topics in the negotiations for visa liberalization. Serbian negotiators told European Commission officials that Serbia must issue passports to all its citizens and claims that this question is not a problem in the process currently. Political science experts Jovan Teokarevic, however, said that this could present a problem, because it seriously endangers Serbia’s ability to guarantee the control of migration. Teokarevic told Danas daily that this is "just the beginning of the conflict between two issues that cannot be reconciled", in his words, "the Serbian decision to never recognize Kosovo and its wish to become an EU member-state".
