Mirek Topolanek criticized Holland for blocking the further EU integration of the Western Balkans and violating the founding ideas of the European community. “Introducing new iron curtains, barriers and walls is the road to hell. The Western Balkans is a part of Europe in which the EU has pitifully underperformed. It allowed a war to spread to a level without precedent, not seen since World War II,” said the Czech prime minister. Blocking integration “creates new iron curtain” Topolanek, whose country is currently presiding over the EU, said that Brussels would be creating a new problem for itself by not gradually integrating the Western Balkans, insisting all the while that all the given criteria be respected. “That is not only the view of the Czech Republic, but the majority view of the EU,” Topolanek said, asked whether his country was at odds with Holland and other countries holding back Albania, Serbia and Montenegro on the road to the EU. Topolanek said that the integration process would not be easy, nor automatic, but that “the membership of the Western Balkans is the only path that leads forward.” He said that the reservations of certain EU countries and their citizens towards further enlargement constituted a personal insult to him. “The Czech Republic entered the EU only six years ago. There are many people in front of the door who have also been victims of totalitarian regimes and believe in the same values as we do. What gives us the right to refuse to give them at least a chance,” Topolanek asked.
