Serbs from Vitina and Gnjilane municipalities have blocked Kosovo Ministry offices in Gracanica calling for the Serbian government to give them jobs. They left the Kosovo institutions a year ago when the province declared independence from Serbia, at the behest of the Serbian government, which promised to find them new jobs. Serbs protest in Gracanica, demanding jobs After talks with Kosovo Coordination Center Chief Zvonimir Stevic and Deputy Kosovo Minister Dragan Petkovic, Miodrag Stolic, a representative of the protesters, told KIM Radio that they had received pledges that the problem would be resolved by the end of the month. “They agree with our demands and support us. They promised that our case would be resolved by the end of the month, be it positively or negatively,” he said. “We said that we would all head up to Serbian government HQ if they don’t give us a positive answer or say that they cannot help us,” Stolic warned. “We won’t give up until they sort these issues out,” he added. Stevic said that the decision made by the previous government for all Serbs and non-Albanians to leave the Kosovo institutions after the unilateral independence declaration and re-employ them in the public sector had had a political character. “Maybe, at that moment in time, the decision had some sense, since it was a reaction to the independence declaration, but that decision was made without any financial coverage. The basic problem for resolving their status is securing the necessary funding,” Stevic said. No budget funds were set aside to this end for 2009 as a result of the financial crisis. He said that the only way to meet the demands of these people would be to allocate funds for them in the budget review.
