The majority of citizens support Serbia’s EU integration, but often don’t understand the process and its requirements, says the Office for EU Integration. Public support for EU integration has never fallen below 60 percent, which puts Serbia in third place amongst countries in the region in that context, Office Director Milica Delevic told an international conference, “Citizens’ Dialogue for an EU Consensus”. “Frequent misunderstandings on EU path” She said that in addition to the benefits of accession, citizens needed to know what obligations came with integration, which was why developing a dialogue was necessary. According to Delevic, the central theme should not be the speed of adopting EU laws, but the manner of applying them, as they contributed to improving the quality of life. Indeed, all laws that Serbia is due to adopt on its EU path are in the interests of Serbian citizens, she said. Conference participants said that it was precisely good communication between civil society, the government and EU that was a prerequisite for the quality of the integration process. State Secretary in the Public Administration and Local Self-Government Ministry Dusko Radakovic said that that was why it was important that information about ministry and government work should be publicly available to all. The next step is forming a government office for cooperation with non-governmental organizations, said Citizen’s Initiative Director Miljenko Dereta, noting that some ministries were already cooperating with a large number of organizations.
