The only reason the west EU countries had any growth the last 15 years was of eastern Europe. Their pent up demand fore western products paid from hidden hard currency under their mattresses. Later the nonsense of western Europe easy credit. Now they are in debt to their eyeballs and so are the western consumers and governments on easy free wheeling credit once upon a time ago. Before that their economies of the western Europe were stagnant. Now they are in negative contraction and printing steal money it will be worthless not even good for toilet paper! You haven't seen nothing yet. Have a good day from Croatia.

"So, if you really care about your pounds, better place them in a Romanian bank.
(adrian/bucharest, 3 March 2009, 20:25)"

That makes as much sense as a chocolate teapot.

Oh really Mircea, you think so?!

T Payne, I applaud your interest on contemporary romanian literature and Mircea Cartarescu's work for culture and cultural management in EU, but regarding your second comment, please try to remeber the situation of the banks in UK and how many went down and I will tell you that in Romania, Erste (BCR) Bank for example, announced a 500 million Eur profit. So, if you really care about your pounds, better place them in a Romanian bank.

"According to Delević, the central theme should not be the speed of adopting EU laws,..."

LOL! They didn't when it came to letting in Bulgaria and Romania over cleaning up organized crime and corruption.

Even when you are in the club, member states are pretty sloppy and lazy at implementing EC Directives, France being one of the worst.

The Dossies/Tadic & co. were at minimum dishonest during the elections as to how rapidly Serbia could join the EU if they voted for the preferred parties. They knew perfectly well that they could not promise any time frame for Serbia to be in the EU but they had nothing else to offer the voters.

Other european states who directly supported and helpt to manipulate the last elections so the right parties got in also fed these unrealistic hopes.

As we have seen over the border dispute between Slovenia and Croatia, the Haves (member states like Slovenia, Greece) essentially hold a veto over the have Nots (Croatia, FYROM).

The same is true of Serbia. Where as implementation of the acquis communautaire is fundamental to entry, 'extra' and 'special' demands before entry can and will be made of Serbia. It only takes one objection.

And all this is without even going into how certain EU members are 'feeling today', i.e. waves of 'enlargement fatigue' or using any excuses such as the current global financial crisis to say they 'can't afford enlargement'.

The EU plays the same game with the EU. A lot of words, but very little action.

Not only in the former Yugoslavia, but all over Europe, people are getting wise to the EU. That's why the Irish, who benefited so much from EU membership in the past, voted against the Lisbon Treaty.

The problem is not the basic ideal of European unity, which I wholeheartedly support on an economic level, but the fact that it's all gone too far too soon.

The crunch came when nations like Romania and Bulgaria were allowed in for cynical geopolitical reasons rather than sound economic ones; hence my own somewhat disparaging remarks to Mircea like the one above.

Serbs and Croats, for different reasons (the Croat-Slovene border dispute, and the Hague demands on Serbia, etc) are now noticing the inconsistencies in how the EU operates and expands and they trust it less and less.

"Frequent misunderstandings" - now that is putting it lightly!

Serbia has a 40% anti-EU, hard core Red-Brigade, in my opinion.

Let's face it: the country is polarized about this right down the middle.

The EU does little to help matters either: always more demands, more ultimatums and mixed signals.

Pherhaps it is the Minister who has really misunderstands the EU: maybe it is not sincere about wanting Serbia to join at all.

i must say that this time i agree with MIrcea..this report with 60% of Serbs "loving" EU is unbelieveble seems all propaganda..just one question..
Why in Croatia a country that has had few problems with Eu the "love " rate is 38% and in Serbia with all his recent history with Eu the "love" rate is above 60 % ???
Simply i can't believe at this polls...

Is that all you've got for us today, Mircea.

One thing's for sure, you're not Mircea Crtrescu, although I understand that he shares your obsession with the EU, or rather, should I say, my tax pounds!

So what if there's misunderstandings. The only reason people actually want to join the EU is because of the illusion that it means they willo be accepted by the west and that they'll become rich.

Never mind that the laws one has to pass to join the EU consist of some 10,000 pages that are foten contradictory and largely restrict the rights of people.

Not only that but the myth of economic propseirty is being destroyed. Look at Eastern Europe, sure they grew for a few years but:
- They increasing own fewer and fewer of their own industries and of their own economy.
- Their growth has been lead largely by consumer debt5 has why some economist predict a collapse of the economic system in the east worst then the Asian crisis of 1998.
- Not only that but the EU is a protectionist club. Just look at how greatly ity benefits France and Germany who are able to maintain industries that should have ceased to fubnction in their countries a long time ago.
